prescription swim goggles

Prescription swim goggles are the best solution for people who wear glasses and/or contact lenses. Many people with poor vision do not feel comfortable or safe stepping into a swimming pool when they cannot see clearly.

Wearing optical glasses in a pool is impractical and you risk damaging them. While wearing contact lenses is never recommended because of the risk of eye infections.

Please read our post to find out why you should not wear contact lenses in water.

How to Choose the Right Prescription Swim Goggles

Prescription swim goggles are ordered with an optical power to closely match your exact prescription but will not provide the same level of vision as your glasses or contact lenses.

However, they will provide more than adequate vision for use in and around a swimming pool. And for people with moderate or higher prescriptions swim goggles will be significantly better than nothing at all!

A spectacle prescription is written in the following way:

Eye   Sphere / Cylinder x Axis

R  -3.00 /  -0.50  x  180

L  -2.50 /  -1.00  x  180

Nearsighted or myopic vision (negative diopter) lenses are the most commonly available goggles. Positive diopter lenses are for farsighted swimmers, and are less common.

The most important step to choosing prescription goggles is determining the diopter power that most closely matches your current prescription.

Calculate the Goggle Lens Power

Calculate the goggle lens power you need by taking into account two aspects of your prescription

The sphere (or sph) is the main part of your prescription and will be ‘–’ for short-sightedness (myopia) and ‘+’ for long-sightedness (hypermetropia)

The cylinder (or cyl) is the secondary part of your prescription and refers to the amount of astigmatism you have. This is usually a minus (-) number but may occasionally be plus (+).

The axis is the third part of your prescription and is usually be ignored when selecting prescription goggles.

Choose your lenses by following these simple steps:
1. Choose the power you order primarily on the amount of the sphere (short or long sightedness). Make sure you have a recent spectacle prescription from your optometrist.

2. Most prescription swim goggles come in 0.50 diopter steps so select the nearest power rounded down to the nearest half diopter. Perform this simple calculation for each eye as most prescription swim goggles allow you to order different powers for the left and right lenses.

3. As prescription swimming goggles are used in the pool and not for any detailed tasks small degrees of astigmatism can be ignored.

4. If you have a moderate degree of astigmatism (around 2.0 cyl), then you should add half of this to choose the most appropriate lens power.

5. If you are unsure what prescription to order please ask you optometrist for advice.

Examples:

1)    -3.00 /-1.00 x 90 – the best power would be -3.50 (-3.00 plus half of -1.00 so -3.00 plus -0.50)

2)    -3.00 /+1.00 x 90 – the best power would be -2.50 (-3.00 plus half of +1.00 so -3.00 plus +0.50)

3)    +4.00 /-1.00 x 90 – the best power would be +3.50 (+4.00 plus half of -1.00 so +4.00 plus -0.50)

4)    +4.00 /+1.00 x 90 – the best power would be +4.50 (+4.00 plus half of +1.00 so +4.00 plus +0.50)

5)    -4.00 /-1.50 x 45 – the best power would be -4.50 (-4.00 plus half of -1.50 so -4.00 plus -0.75 = -4.75, then round down to the nearest half diopter)

How to Care for Your Swimming Goggles

  1. Gently rinse goggles with fresh water after every use.
  2. Avoid touching, rubbing or wiping the inside of the lens as this can quickly break up or destroy the anti-fog coating on the lenses.
  3. Do not put wet goggles in closed containers.
  4. Allow goggles to dry naturally in fresh air.
  5. Do not leave goggles in direct sunlight to avoid color fading.
  6. Use a goggle pouch for added protection against scratching.
